In Reception classes, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. Learning is organised in these areas:
- Communication and Language
- Physical development
- Personal, social and emotional development
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts & Design
Learning is through play and through direct teaching of foundation skills. In all areas of the curriculum, children work on carefully planned activities to meet their needs. The staff spend time observing the children to gain evidence of their development and to inform future planning. Provision for children in the Foundation Stage (Reception Year) is good because members of staff work together exceptionally well as a team, enabling children of differing abilities to do very well in all areas of learning. By the time children start Year 1, most are working well beyond the levels expected for their age. Children particularly enjoy the exciting activities planned around a shared theme.
British Values in Early Years at Redwell
In Early Years at Redwell Primary School, the British Values are embedded in everyday practice and experiences to help our pupils understand important social and moral principles. The key British Values are:
- Democracy: Children are encouraged to make choices, express their opinions, and participate in decision-making. This is reflected in voting activities for what they want to play or choosing how to organise a task which links to the Characteristics of Effective Learning.
- Rule of Law: Children are introduced to the importance of rules in the environment. This is done by explaining why rules are in place (for safety, fairness, and respect) and encouraging children to follow them, such as using indoor voices or taking turns during play.
- Individual Liberty: Children are encouraged to develop a sense of autonomy and confidence. They are given the freedom to make decisions, explore their interests, and express themselves. This can be seen in activities that allow for choice, such as selecting learning materials or working independently on a project.
- Mutual Respect and Tolerance: At Redwell we promote respect for others, highlighting the importance of kindness, empathy, and understanding differences. Children are encouraged to interact with others from diverse backgrounds and develop positive relationships through collaborative play, shared activities, and celebrating cultural differences.
By integrating these values into daily routines, we help to foster a strong sense of community, responsibility, and respect for others from a young age.
